I was very excited when I first saw pictures of the “Our Flag Stands for Freedom” quilt pattern by Primitive Gatherings. I had been wanting to work on some type of “Americana” quilt but I had been struggling to find one that really caught my eye. I didn’t want something that was too old-fashioned/traditional but I also didn’t want something too abstract (I know, picky…picky, does this remind anyone else of Goldilocks and the Three Bears?). Anyway, as soon as I saw pictures of the “Our Flag Stands for Freedom” quilt, I knew I had found the one. It is immediately evident that it represents the American flag, but the layout of the stars and the diagonal separation of the “stars” and the “stripes” gives it a modern look without being too abstract. This one was “just right”.
This was the first time that I purchased an actual quilt kit. I had always been hesitant to buy one before because I have a pesky habit of reading my cutting ruler wrong and cutting things too small. I worried that I would mess up a cut and then not have enough of the fabric to re-cut. This kit, however, came with plenty of fabric. It actually comes with enough fabric for a full size quilt and a mini quilt. Additionally, I didn’t have any major cutting catastrophes, whew!
I don’t know that I will make the mini quilt but I am on the lookout for another great “Americana” style quilt to use the rest of the fabric for.
The “Our Flag Stands for Freedom” quilt kit uses the American Gatherings fabric line by Primitive Gatherings. I really like how this fabric line has a good mix darks and lights with small prints. The smaller prints allow you to work with smaller pieces without losing the graphics and they also allow the fabric colors…the red, white, and blue, to tell the quilt’s story.
To date I have only finished piecing the quilt top. I have not yet picked out a backing fabric or actually quilted it yet, but I will post an update when that step is done.
